Schempp-Hirth is one of the world’s biggest and most successful glider manufacturers. Founded in 1935, based in Kirchheim/Teck in southern Germany, the company has produced more than 5.000 airplanes, continually improving flying characteristics, safety and manufacturing process since then. Their aircraft have already won a lot of World Gliding Championships as well as innumerable national championships. Since 1935, when the first series machine, the Gö1 “Wolf”, was produced in wood, S-H has been in the forefront of innovation and development in the production of gliders and motor gliders. Over the years production materials have been improved via glass fibre to the current state-of-the-art carbon fibre with high performance epoxy resins giving maximum flying quality and safety with minimal weight. Production processes have developed from carpentry via hand lay-up to an additional vacuum extraction leading to lower cost, lighter weight and more consistent quality. Sika Biresin® CR122 epoxy resin system with LBA Approval, is now the resin of choice in the production of the fuselage of S-H gliders due to its excellent handling and physiological and mechanical properties.
